For someone from the west, India provides an authentic adventure - stimulating, absorbing, daunting, sometimes moving and shocking. Here is one of the world's great dramas; an ancient, vast and crowded land committed to the most formidably challenging exercise in mass democracy. It is a spectacle in which hope, pride, paradox and uncertainty mingle and struggle. It is conducted on the whole, and to India's credit in the open. The lasting memories of the land are hospitality, kindness, good humour and generosity. Here is a society of over 1000 million people, growing by a million a month, divided and united by language, caste, religion and regional loyalties. It has often been described as functioning anarchy; and it is in many ways an amiable one, of marvellous fluidity and tolerance. Indeed, the true Indian motif is not the Taj Mahal, the elephant or the patient peasant behind the ox-drawn plough. It is the crowd, the ocean of faces in the land of multitudes, endlessly stirring, pushing and moving. It is in this human circulation that one sees India's colour, variety, busyness, and, senses also its power, vitality and grandeur.

Itinerary

Day 1: Delhi – Varanasi

A guided tour of Old Delhi begins at Raj Ghat, Mahatma Gandhi's cremation site, continuing past the Red Fort and by cycle rickshaw to Jama Masjid, the largest mosque in Asia, built by Shah Jahan. Tip: keep your camera accessible through the Old Delhi rickshaw stretch — it's the most fast-moving, photogenic part of the day.

Day 2: Varanasi

A visit to Sarnath, the UNESCO World Heritage Site where the Buddha is believed to have delivered his first sermon after attaining enlightenment. The Dhamek Stupa, engraved with delicate floral carvings, marks the traditional spot of that first teaching, while the Mulagandha Kuti Vihar Temple houses frescoes depicting scenes from the Buddha's life. Tip: Sarnath is one of Buddhism's four holiest pilgrimage sites — worth allowing extra time here if you have any specific interest in Buddhist history, since it's easy to rush through as "just another stop."

Day 3: Varanasi – Agra

An early 5:30 AM pickup for a sunrise boat ride along the Ganges — Varanasi is considered one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, and the ghats along the river have been the site of Hindu pilgrimage, cremation rites, and daily ritual bathing for thousands of years. The day continues with visits to the old city, Banaras Hindu University, and temples, closing with the evening Ganga Aarti prayer ceremony viewed by boat, before an overnight train to Agra. Tip: the sunrise boat ride is Varanasi's signature experience — dress warmly if traveling in winter months, since mornings on the river can be considerably colder than the city itself. The overnight train means packing an overnight bag separately from your main luggage for easier access.

Day 4: Agra

Your chauffeur meets you at Tundla Railway Station for the transfer to your hotel, followed by a sunrise tour of the Taj Mahal — commissioned in 1631 and completed over 22 years by roughly 20,000 artisans, built by Shah Jahan as a mausoleum for his wife Mumtaz Mahal. Tip: after an overnight train, this is a demanding morning — factor in time to freshen up at the hotel before heading out, rather than going straight from the station to the monument.

Day 5: Agra – Fatehpur Sikri – Jaipur (237 km / ~6 hrs)

En route to Jaipur, a stop at Fatehpur Sikri, built by Akbar in 1571 in honor of the Sufi saint Sheikh Salim Chishti and serving as the Mughal capital for 14 years before being abandoned due to water shortages. The red sandstone city blends Hindu and Mughal architectural influences and remains remarkably well preserved precisely because it was inhabited for such a short time. Tip: minimal shade across most of the site — carry water and dress for the heat.

Day 6: Jaipur

Hawa Mahal photo stop, followed by Amber Fort, the Rajput hilltop capital overlooking Moata Lake. Tip: start as early as the day allows — Amber Fort gets significantly busier by mid-morning.

Day 7: Jaipur – Delhi – Airport

An early breakfast and checkout, followed by the drive back to Delhi, completing the full Delhi–Agra–Varanasi–Jaipur circuit. Tip: if your onward flight is same-day, confirm the exact drop-off (hotel vs. airport) with your guide the night before to avoid any last-minute routing confusion.
